Retail Sales Show Dining Out Declines and eCommerce Gains Ground as Consumers Pull Back (PYMNTS)
The latest data on retail sales show that in February, per the initial reading from the Census Bureau indicate that retail sales were up a muted 0.2% as measured from January — but the latter’s decline was steeper than had been estimated, at 1.2%, where early computations had it at 0.9%. The February data was lower than consensus estimates calling for a 0.6% increase. The report on Monday (March 17) would have been worse had it not been for online spending, as non-store retailers (a category that includes eCommerce activity) showed sales gains of 2.4%.
Ecommerce Logistics Surge Sparks a Distribution Center Boom (Digital Commerce 360)
In 2024, U.S. ecommerce accounted for 56% of total retail sales growth. It climbed 8% year over year compared to just 1.8% for in-store sales, the report says. Ecommerce has accounted for at least a fifth of U.S. retail sales every year since 2020, Digital Commerce 360 analysis shows. More than $500 billion of 2024’s U.S. ecommerce sales came from the two largest online retailers in North America. Those two retailers also have largest ecommerce logistics networks.
Swap Raises $40 Million for eCommerce Logistics Network (Finovate)
Ecommerce inventory management platform Swap received a $40 million investment this week. The Series B round was led by ICONIQ Growth and saw participation from previous investors Cherry Ventures, QED Investors, and 9900 Capital. The investment brings Swap’s total funding to $49 million since it was founded in 2021.
