Announcing: Amazon ISO-Compliant Seal Requirement for FTL and Intermodal Shipments

As of September 12, 2024, Amazon now requires full truckload (FTL) and intermodal shipments to be sealed with an ISO-17712-compliant, Amazon-approved RFID seal at pickup.

If you are shipping less than a truckload (LTL), ISO-compliant seals will be placed at a carrier consolidation terminal before a shipment arrives at an Amazon facility.

Amazon’s updated seal requirements were announced in late 2023 and have now come into full effect and enforcement. The goal of their new seal policy is to enhance security, minimize product loss and tampering, and protect product shipments.

To remain compliant with Amazon regulations and ensure your products aren’t turned away at FBA facilities, you must:

  1. Seal FTL and intermodal shipment truck doors with an ISO 17712-compliant Amazon-approved RFID seal applied before the shipment leaves your facility.
  2. Print or note the seal number on the bill of lading (BOL) next to the Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) and Progressive Number (PRO#) or under the Ship To section of the bill of lading.

Key details of the Amazon ISO-compliant seal program

Below are the important key details of the Amazon FBA ISO-Compliant Seal program.

1) ISO-compliant seals are now mandatory

Sellers sending goods to Amazon must now place ISO-compliant seals on trailers. These seals provide a unique identification number per shipment so that Amazon can verify the information and integrity or the shipment when it arrives at one of their fulfillment centers.

2) ISO-compliant seals must be used for all full truckload (FTL) and intermodal shipments going to Amazon

These ISO-compliant seals are required for all FTL and intermodal shipments carrying sellers’ products. The unique seal number must be recorded on the Bill of Lading for traceability throughout the shipping process.

3) New security protocols are in place around these ISO-compliant seals

If a seal is broken or incorrectly documented, Amazon will investigate the shipment for tampering, loss, damage, or any other discrepancies. If sellers refuse to comply with these investigations, they take on any risks and shortages or losses won’t be covered by Amazon.

4) Some FTLs will be able to access RFID-enabled seals

Amazon has introduced RFID seals for specific shipments. These enable automated tracking and verification for a more streamlined check-in processes at Amazon facilities.

Where to buy Amazon-approved RFID seals

If you have an Amazon Business account, you can purchase these seals on the Amazon Business store.

You can also purchase Amazon-approved RFID seals directly from Guiseal, the seal vendor. You’ll need to create a customer profile and use the authorization code available in Seller Central to verify that you’re are an Amazon seller.

  • Logistics providers and freight forwarders. Third-party logistics companies like MyFBAPrep often handle shipments into Amazon on behalf of customers. All logistics partners must ensure compliance and adherence to the new sealing requirements to avoid shipment delays or penalties.
  • Sellers shipping in bulk, even those who use less than a truckload (LTL), may also be affected, especially if they plan to scale to FTL volumes. Amazon is likely to apply stricter guidelines across all bulk shipping categories over time.
